6/30 - Classical Music at the Click of a Mouse
For more than seven decades, classical music lovers in New York City and thereabouts have been enriched by the offerings on WQXR. Operated commercially by the New York Times Company for most of that period, the station went public in 2009, and is now supported mainly by contributions from listeners, corporations, and foundations. Its non-stop programming--which covers many of the city's outstanding live performances--is also streamed on the internet for the pleasure of listeners worldwide (see the "On Air" play button atop each page). Highlights for us on the "Programs" menu are Bill McGlaughlin's Exploring Music , Kent Tritle's The Choral Mix , and Classics for Kids . Knowledgable articles and lively commentary (apart from occasionally inane pieces such as "Trumpeter Alison Balsom's Top Five Hotels Around the World") round out the varied musical fare served up on WQXR's website.
